A VARIETY OF FOOD FACTS

It's time to give you not so well-known food facts from around the world. Ever wonder why some foods are called the way they are? I guess this post is best for you.


  • Have you known what people ate during prehistoric times? They eat any animals and plants available to them. As archaeological evidence portrays, some of them dug radishes and wild onions and looked for mushrooms, wild squash, waterlily seed and cabbage to eat. They even take in raw insects. Some tasty insects have been extinct since they were over-hunted or maybe overeaten.


  • During special occasions, Africa's Bedouin tribes stuff eggs within a fish and then place it inside a chicken. Next, the chicken is stuffed inside a sheep and the sheep inside a camel then they roast it.

  • Breakfast in Egypt is frequently bought and consumed at a street stall. Commonly, they wrap various fried vegetables like beans, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant in a bread.


  • As folklore says, pretzels were made to offer to children who learn their prayers. The shape of pretzel represents folded arms across the chest.


  • The Asian delicacy called bird's nest soup is done using real but edible bird's nest. In China, this soup made with Asian Swift's nest is a prized food.


  • Gorp or Good Old Raisins and Peanuts is a name for the energy food of hikers and bikers.


  • The doctor George Washington Carver invented the peanut butter as a health food. Africans who were the initial growers of peanuts call them as "ground nuts."


  • Australia's Aborigines refer to their native food as "bush-tucks."  It comprises of game meat including turkey, kangaroo and a type of lizard called goanna.


  • Buffalo Wings, which is not in any way related to bison, are spicy chicken which were first discovered in Bufallo, New York.



  • The orange carrots we have today previously had purple colors. During the late 16th century, mutant strains of the purple carrot including white and yellow carrots were used to develop the sweet and orange variety we have today. Before this, almost all carrots were purple having mutated varieties like the white and yellow carrots.


  • Garlic makes your breath smell bad because of the sulfuric compounds it contains. The compounds promote microbial growth further increasing the microbes in our mouth. These compounds undergo metabolism which then passes through your bloodstream. They(especially allyl methyl sulfide) are discharged through pores and transferred to the air which enters your lungs thus your breath shall stink even if after cleaning your mouth.
